2014 is in full swing, but if you haven't made a New Year's Resolution yet, there's still time! January is National Mentoring Month, and I can't think of a better resolution than giving your time to mentor someone else.
Outdoor Magazine published that "multiple studies have shown volunteering increases well-being while also lowering cholesterol and reducing mortality rates among volunteers." Aside from the feel-good benefits you'll receive, think of the difference you could make!
I've been a Big Sister through the Big Sister Association of Boston for several years now, and I absolutely love my Little Sister, T. We like to stay active around Boston, visiting museums, shopping, taking dance classes, and even getting mani/pedis together. It's a volunteer experience that really doesn't feel like volunteering- she's just a much younger, more impressionable friend.
To be a mentor, you don't need special skills, just an ability to listen and offer friendship, guidance and encouragement. If it sounds like something you'd like to try, there's no time like the present! Click here and apply to volunteer or find a similar organization in your area.
